We updated our AppleTV App but can't see the updates. How can we refresh the App to see the changes?

With AppleTV Apps, all Apps are kept open in the background when exiting the app. This means that newly uploaded content or updates to the App in general might not be displayed instantly, unless you close the app.

Updates to an app (e.g. integration of video advertising, new graphics, etc.) will be initiated automatically if "Automatically Update Apps" is selected in the settings of your AppleTV device, provided the App is closed and is not running in the background anymore. If that setting isn't selected, then you would have to manually update the app via the app store.

This behavior can be compared with iOS Apps on iPads or iPhones. You may have seen all your Apps still open and running - including all of the Apps you thought you had exited - when double-clicking on the Home Button. In the same way Apple keeps AppleTV Apps open in the background, which delays updates to your App.

That said, Lightcast developed and implemented a solution for our client's AppleTV Apps in order to display updates instantly without further delays. Users of the App can easily refresh the App by clicking the "Refresh" button within the App, which triggers a call to the Lightcast API and results in sending updated information to the App. Updates such as new media content uploaded through your Lightcast account, or any other updates made for the App will be displayed instantly after clicking the refresh button.
